Top athletes to represent city at upcoming Uttar Pradesh Open Athletics Championship

Lucknow: In an impressive display of athletic excellence, Satyam Maurya, Gurmeet Singh, and Sonia Sahni bagged double gold medals during the Lucknow Athletics Team Selection Trials held at the KD Singh Babu Stadium. The event, organized to select participants for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Open Men’s and Women’s Athletics Championship, saw fierce competition across multiple track and field categories.

Satyam Maurya delivered a commanding performance by securing first place in both the men’s shot put and discus throw events. In the shot put event, Rajveer Yadav claimed the second spot, followed by Aryan Sonkar in third. In the discus throw, Mrinjal Jain finished second behind Satyam.

On the track, Gurmeet Singh dominated the sprint events, clinching first place in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races. Medhansh gave a consistent performance by finishing second in both events, while Avni stood third in the 100 meters.

Sonia Sahni emerged as a standout performer in the women’s category by winning the long jump and triple jump events. Her victories added significant strength to the women’s lineup for the forthcoming state-level meet.

Other notable performances included Sarvjeet Patel, who secured the top position in the men’s 20-kilometer walk. In the 1500-meter run, Shiv Kumar Yadav came first, followed by Satyam Yadav in second and Amarjeet Singh in third. In the 5000 meters, Raghubir Yadav claimed first place while Ashutosh Sharma finished second. Anupam took the top position in the 3000-meter run with Gyanendra Kumar Rawat close behind in second.

In hurdles, N. Kumar led the men’s 400-meter hurdle event. Islam Ali dominated the grueling 10,000-meter run, securing first place. Ravi Pal and Sonu Singh Rajput followed in second and third positions respectively.

Abhay Kumar came out on top in the javelin throw, with Rajveer Yadav and Divyansh Nigam finishing second and third. Divyansh also earned first place in the high jump, while Aryan Sonkar stood second. In the long jump, Yugyant Shekhar Singh secured the first position with Piyush Sharma finishing second.

The 400-meter dash saw Ayush Kumar leading the field, followed by Aditya Kumar and Uday Bajpai. In the 800-meter run, Shiv Kumar Nishad took first place, while Sahitya Verma and Aditya Kumar finished second and third respectively.

The women athletes also delivered commendable performances across events. In the shot put, Sheikh Navija won gold, with Monika Yadav in second place. Sheikh Navija also claimed second position in the javelin throw, which was won by Pragya Jain.

In the women’s 100-meter sprint, Saiba Khan sprinted to first place while Meemansha Tripathi took second. Meemansha, however, turned the tables in the 200-meter race, winning the gold with Saiba finishing second. Ragini Singh claimed the top spot in the 400 meters, with Anika Mishra placing second.

In middle and long-distance events, Mohini Yadav won the 800-meter race, Ruby stood first in the 1500 meters, and Preeti Yadav claimed victory in the 3000-meter run. Sudha Yadav secured first position in the 5000 meters, while Ruby followed in second place.

According to B.R. Varun, Secretary of the Lucknow District Athletics Association, the athletes selected through these trials will go on to represent the city in the Uttar Pradesh Open Athletics Championship scheduled to take place on July 29 and 30 at Guru Gobind Singh Sports College’s Athletics Stadium in Lucknow.

The trials drew participation from hundreds of athletes and were conducted in the presence of officials and coaches including Kamta Singh, Halimuddin, Rajesh Gaur, Jyoti Nishad, Lavkush, Sandeep, and Vishwajeet, who encouraged the athletes throughout the selection process. The event not only showcased Lucknow’s rising athletic talent but also built momentum for the state’s premier athletics meet later this month.
