Mumbai: Sanjay Takale, an aerospace racer and Director of Aerpace Industries Limited, has etched his name in history as the first Indian to compete in the prestigious Dakar Rally’s classic 4×4 class. Demonstrating remarkable perseverance, Takale secured 10th place in his class and 18th overall out of 96 competitors worldwide. This incredible achievement took place in Shubaytah, Saudi Arabia, during what is regarded as the toughest rally in the world. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) formally recognized and publicized his accomplishment.
The Journey to Glory
Supported by Compagnie Saharienne and Aerpace Industries Limited, Takale began his Dakar journey in 47th place at Stage 1. With grit and skill, he steadily climbed through the ranks, tackling some of the most challenging terrains and intense competition. A milestone was achieved during Stage 3, where he became the first Indian to finish seventh in a stage, marking a moment of pride for Indian motorsport. His resilience was further displayed in Stage 12, where he secured fifth place at the stage finish and ultimately ended the rally in 18th overall.
Overcoming Challenges
Takale’s Dakar expedition was not without its hurdles. A navigational error in Stage 2 briefly set him back, but his unwavering focus and determination helped him recover quickly. By Stage 6, he had moved up to 26th place and maintained a top-20 position thereafter.
