Russian Ambassador Reiterates Oil Exports’ Benefit to India Amid Trump Remarks

New Delhi | Denis Alipov, Russia’s ambassador to India, on Thursday highlighted the importance of Russian oil exports to India, calling them “very beneficial” and aligned with India’s national interests.

Addressing queries about India’s continued energy imports from Russia despite pressure from former US President Donald Trump, Alipov stated, “Our cooperation is very much in tune with those interests, and the Indian government is acting with the country’s national interests in mind first and foremost.”

The ambassador stressed that India-Russia ties are bilateral and not aimed against any third country, responding to suggestions that India’s energy decisions were influenced by its relationship with the United States. He noted the gradual growth of the overall relationship and the steady increase in commercial links between the two nations in recent years.

Alipov also mentioned that preparations are at an “advanced stage” for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to India in December, which will include the signing of multiple agreements. “We anticipate a fruitful visit,” he said.

His comments came a day after Trump claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had informed him India would cease purchasing Russian oil, which Trump described as a “big step” in isolating Moscow economically.
