New Delhi: In the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump imposing a 50% tariff aimed at pressuring India, Russia has assured New Delhi that the sanctions will not negatively impact Indo-Russian trade. Trump’s strategy sought to weaken India-Russia ties, assuming India would reduce oil imports from Russia under American pressure. Contrary to these expectations, India’s strategic partnership with Russia has grown stronger, prompting Moscow to mitigate any potential economic impact from the tariffs. Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed his government to take necessary measures to offset any losses India might face.
Addressing the international Valdai Discussion Club at a Black Sea resort in southern Russia, President Putin emphasized that Russia has always maintained a stable, problem-free relationship with India. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a trusted partner and a wise, nationalist leader focused on the country’s interests. Putin reiterated that India’s decision to continue purchasing crude oil from Russia despite U.S. pressure demonstrates its sovereignty and strengthens its global standing.
Putin outlined Russia’s plan to address trade imbalances by increasing purchases of Indian agricultural products and pharmaceuticals. He highlighted the vast potential for bilateral economic cooperation but acknowledged that challenges in financing, logistics, and payments need to be resolved to fully realize these opportunities.
The Russian president also addressed wider geopolitical concerns, warning Europe against provocations and emphasizing that Russia would respond swiftly and decisively to any threats, while clarifying that there is no intention to attack NATO members. He criticized European powers for creating hysteria over the possibility of war with Russia and insisted that reports of Russian violations in Denmark, Estonia, and Poland are exaggerated.

Putin further praised India’s diplomatic efforts in promoting peace in Ukraine, underlining India’s role as a responsible, non-aligned nation alongside China and other BRICS members. He stressed that India’s continued engagement with Russia strengthens both countries’ sovereignty and regional stability.
As tensions between Russia, the U.S., and Europe continue to simmer, Moscow remains committed to ensuring that India faces no economic disadvantage due to Trump’s tariffs, safeguarding the long-standing Indo-Russian partnership.
