Richmond Fellowship Society’s Work in Mental Health Praised by Dr. Rajeshwar Singh

Lucknow: The Lucknow branch of The Richmond Fellowship Society (India) marked its 21st anniversary with a workshop on mental health, relationships, and youth at the Indian Medical Association (IMA) building.

The event was attended by Rajeshwar Singh, MLA from Sarojini Nagar, as the chief guest, while noted psychiatrist Dr. Dinesh Dua was present as the guest of honour.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Rajeshwar Singh lauded the organisation’s remarkable contribution to the field of mental health and emphasized the need to include mental health education in school curricula, particularly for Classes 10 and 12. In a significant gesture, he also announced a grant of ₹10 lakh for the installation of a lift at the Navodaya Mental Health Institute run by the organisation.

Prominent speakers included Dr. Vivek Agarwal, Head of the Psychiatry Department at King George’s Medical University, and Dr. Nehashri Srivastava. They highlighted the deep impact of interpersonal relationships on mental well-being and stressed the importance of understanding youth psychology in today’s changing social environment.

Experts noted that parenting styles and early-life experiences significantly influence mental health outcomes. Children raised in overly strict environments, where their perspectives are often ignored, may be more prone to mental health challenges. The speakers underlined the growing need to address these issues with sensitivity and awareness.

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Prabhat Sitholey, while Secretary Dr. Shashi Rai presented the annual report. She shared that the Lucknow branch was established in March 2005 by 12 founding members under the leadership of Dr. A. K. Agrawal, and has now grown to 172 members.

The organisation works towards supporting individuals suffering from mental illness and their families, focusing on rehabilitation and social inclusion. Its Navodaya Mental Health Institute in Gomti Nagar operates on a ‘no profit, no loss’ basis and is considered a unique initiative in central India.

Vice President Dr. L. K. Maheshwari also spoke about the institution’s initiatives. The event featured the release of a commemorative souvenir and cultural performances by trainees of the Navodaya centre.

The programme was conducted by Dr. Neeta Saxena, while Dr. Madhurima Pradhan delivered the vote of thanks. The event concluded on a positive note, reinforcing the importance of mental health awareness and community support.
