Richa Ghosh’s Blazing 94 in Vain as South Africa Edge India in ODI World Cup Thriller

Visakhapatnam: Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh produced a sensational 94 off just 77 balls, but her heroic effort could not save India from defeat, as South Africa clinched a thrilling three-wicket win with seven balls to spare in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.

Batting first, India were reeling at 102/6, but Richa staged a stunning counterattack, smashing 4 sixes and 11 fours, stitching crucial partnerships of 51 with Amanjot Kaur (13) and 88 with Sneh Rana (33 off 24). India posted a competitive 251 in 49.5 overs. Left-arm spinner Chloe Tryon (3/32) was South Africa’s most successful bowler, while Nadine de Klerk (2/52) and Marizanne Kapp (2 wickets) provided key breakthroughs.

In reply, South Africa collapsed to 81/5, but captain Laura Wolvaardt (70 off 111) anchored the chase. The turning point came with Nadine de Klerk’s career-best unbeaten 84 off 54 balls, featuring 5 sixes and 8 fours, guiding her team to victory. She also took two wickets, emerging as the match-winner.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted the top order failed, stating, “We must build better starts and convert opportunities. Richa was outstanding, but we need collective responsibility.”

This was India’s first loss after two consecutive wins, while South Africa celebrated their second straight victory, sending a strong message in the tournament.
