Lucknow: A powerful musical theatrical presentation paid tribute to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on his martyrdom day, evoking patriotic fervour among audiences in Lucknow.
The musical play “Shaheedon Ne Lau Jagayi Jo”, organised by the Dr Urmil Kumar Thapliyal Foundation, was staged at Sant Gadge Ji Maharaj Auditorium in Gomtinagar. Directed by Ritu Thapliyal, the production brought alive the spirit of India’s freedom struggle through a compelling blend of revolutionary songs and dramatic storytelling.
The presentation showcased a collage of iconic patriotic songs such as “Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara” and other revolutionary compositions that once faced bans during British rule. These songs were woven into a narrative set inside a prison, symbolising the oppression of revolutionaries who dared to challenge colonial authority.
The story depicted imprisoned freedom fighters celebrating their impending martyrdom with courage and music, even as they endured brutal torture. The emotional intensity peaks with the sacrifice of a fellow revolutionary, igniting anger among prisoners, who ultimately break free from captivity.
The production featured works by noted poets and lyricists including Shyamlal Gupta ‘Parshad’, Nityanand Pandey, Sagar Nizami, Sahir Ludhianvi, Iqbal, and others, compiled and musically adapted by Dr. Thapliyal.
Director Ritu Thapliyal enhanced the performance with strong visual elements, expressive choreography, and effective use of voice modulation, rhythm, and stage energy, making it both visually and emotionally engaging.

Actors including Som Ganguly, Mangal Swaroop Mishra, Sanjay Sharma, Aditya Vishwakarma, Rishabh Pandey, Omkar Pushkar, Satyam Pandey, Rishabh Singh, Arpit Kumar, and others delivered impactful performances, bringing depth to the narrative.
Lighting design by Manish Saini and stagecraft by Ashutosh Anshu added to the immersive experience, supported by a dedicated backstage team.
The event was attended by Rati Shankar Tripathi, Chairman of Bharatendu Natya Academy, as the chief guest.
The performance left the audience deeply moved, rekindling the spirit of patriotism and honouring the sacrifices of India’s revolutionary heroes through music and theatre.
