Renovation Plan for Lucknow’s Chhota Imambara Underway Using Traditional Methods

Lucknow: Lucknow’s iconic Chhota Imambara, a nearly 200-year-old architectural marvel, is set to undergo restoration using the same traditional methods that were employed during its original construction. The repairs will focus on preserving the historical essence of the structure while adhering to the standards of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Traditional Materials for Restoration

The main entrance of the Chhota Imambara will be repaired using a unique blend of traditional materials like bel (wood apple), jaggery, and gum to create the binding mortar. Small, heritage-specific bricks, similar to those used in the original construction, will be utilized to reinforce the structure. Officials have emphasized that the restoration will not alter the original design or architecture of the Imambara.

The ASI-approved restoration project, falling under the Smart City initiative, has been allocated a budget of over ₹6 crore. The work, to be executed by a private agency, is expected to begin soon.

Current Condition of Chhota Imambara

The Chhota Imambara and its main gate are in a state of disrepair, with weakened bricks posing a risk of collapse, particularly during the monsoon season. The issue gained urgency following a High Court reprimand, prompting authorities to take immediate action. Restoration plans include filling holes in the main gate with matching bricks from similar heritage structures and using indigenous materials such as red sand and lime for repairs.

Heritage Zone to Be Encroachment-Free

The administration has also announced plans to make the 1.5 km heritage zone around Chhota Imambara entirely encroachment-free. Key historical landmarks such as Bara Imambara, Rumi Darwaza, Ghanta Ghar, Picture Gallery, and Chhota Imambara will be protected from unauthorized parking and illegal shops.

Municipal Commissioner Inderjit Singh stated that all unauthorized structures within the heritage zone will be removed, and parking facilities will be shifted outside the zone. Special measures will be taken to ensure that tourists visiting these historical sites experience no inconvenience.

This initiative marks a significant step in preserving Lucknow’s cultural heritage while enhancing the experience for visitors, further cementing the city’s reputation as a hub of historical tourism.
