The event was formally launched by Rajnath Singh through a remote activation, followed by a ceremonial interaction with participating athletes. He greeted young sportspersons while riding in an open jeep alongside Brajesh Pathak.
The opening ceremony also featured impressive demonstrations by participants in yoga, taekwondo, and kalaripayattu, drawing applause from the dignitaries present.
Among those present on the stage were Sanjay Seth, Mayor Sushma Kharkwal, along with several legislators and senior officials.
Felicitation of Athletes and Contributors
On the occasion, Rajnath Singh felicitated several athletes, coaches, stadium workers, and sports journalists for their contributions. The honourees were presented with mementos, traditional अंगवस्त्र, and cash awards in recognition of their efforts in promoting sports.
“Sports Key to Nation’s Development”
Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh emphasized that the development of a nation is not only measured by GDP but also by the performance of its athletes and the contribution of sports to the economy.
Reflecting on global trends, he cited countries like Australia, where sports form an integral part of everyday life despite a relatively smaller population. He noted that India, too, is witnessing a significant transformation in its sports culture over the past decade.
“Earlier, India was largely identified with cricket and hockey, but today our athletes are making a mark across international sporting events,” he said, highlighting the country’s growing presence on the global stage.

Government Push for Sports Infrastructure
The Defence Minister underlined the government’s efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure under the leadership of Narendra Modi. He noted that initiatives like the Khelo India programme have significantly increased investment in sports infrastructure, making facilities more accessible even in smaller towns and rural areas.
He also pointed to the development of modern stadiums, training centres, and centres of excellence across the country, enabling young athletes to pursue sports as a viable career.
Lucknow’s Sporting Legacy
Highlighting Lucknow’s rich sporting history, Rajnath Singh recalled that the city hosted the National Games in 1948 and has since remained an important centre for sports activities. He said the “Sansad Khel Mahakumbh” is now becoming a key addition to the city’s sporting calendar.
He expressed his vision of developing world-class sports facilities in Lucknow for every major sport, further strengthening its position as a sporting hub.
Encouraging Youth Participation
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak praised the initiative, stating that such events serve as a major source of inspiration for youth across all Vidhan Sabha constituencies. He emphasized that sports not only promote physical fitness but also contribute to mental well-being.
The event has drawn participation from thousands of young athletes across the Lucknow parliamentary constituency, reflecting growing enthusiasm for sports at the grassroots level.
As India continues to push for a stronger sporting ecosystem, initiatives like the Sansad Khel Mahakumbh are expected to play a crucial role in nurturing talent and building a healthier, more competitive generation.
