PT SMI, HDF Energy, and PT PLN Join Forces to Accelerate Hydrogen-Based Electrification in Indonesia

Jakarta  — Indonesia’s PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero) (“PT SMI”) has reaffirmed its commitment to driving the nation’s clean energy transition by entering into a new collaboration with French energy firm HDF Energy and Indonesia’s state electricity company, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) (“PT PLN”). The three parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Hydrogen Utilization for Electrification  in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace in Jakarta.

The MoU outlines joint efforts to explore financing support for hydrogen-based power generation, particularly on Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara. This initiative was among the key highlights of President Macron’s bilateral visit to Indonesia.

Strong Commitment to Green Transition

“This is a very significant day for PT SMI,” said Reynaldi Hermansjah, President Director of PT SMI. “Having our efforts acknowledged by Presidents Prabowo and Macron fuels our commitment to fostering collaboration in tackling climate change. The project’s focus on hydrogen technology, its location in Eastern Indonesia—our priority region—and the need for blended finance make this endeavor especially meaningful for us.”

Also present at the ceremony were Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PT PLN, and Damien Havard, Founder & CEO of HDF Energy.

Sumba Island: A Model for Green Power

Under the MoU, the three organizations plan to develop a hydrogen-to-power facility on Sumba Island, utilizing HDF Energy’s advanced fuel cell technology. The plant will use renewable sources to produce hydrogen and convert it into clean, stable electricity, positioning Indonesia as a leader in hydrogen-based sustainable energy in the Asia-Pacific region.

Over its projected 25-year lifespan, the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 711,946 tons of CO₂ equivalent, averaging 28,478 tCO₂e annually.

Beyond environmental benefits, PT SMI emphasizes the socioeconomic impact on local communities. “This project will provide clean, reliable electricity to more than 10,000 households in Sumba without harming the environment,” Hermansjah added. “It will also stimulate the local tourism and agriculture sectors, generate over 100 new jobs, and contribute to the region’s overall economic growth.”

PT SMI’s Expanding Climate Portfolio

As of March 2025, PT SMI has supported 96 climate-focused projects worth a total of IDR 175.3 trillion, with IDR 34.1 trillion in committed funding. These projects have the potential to avert 4 million tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions and generate carbon credits valued at around USD 14 million across 48 projects.
