Project to Develop Civil Aviation Infrastructure at Leh Inaugurated

Leh, Ladakh | A major project aimed at strengthening civil aviation infrastructure at Air Force Station Leh was inaugurated on January 28, 2026, marking an important step toward improving air connectivity in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The project was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, in the presence of Air Marshal JS Mann, Senior Air Staff Officer, Western Air Command.

The inauguration represents a significant milestone in enhancing Ladakh’s civil aviation capabilities and reflects the strong spirit of cooperation between the civil administration and various agencies involved in the region’s development. Despite the challenges posed by high-altitude terrain and harsh weather conditions, the upgraded infrastructure was completed in record time.

With the completion of the project, aircraft ground movement at Leh is expected to become smoother, enabling quicker civil departures. The improvements will reduce aircraft turnaround time and significantly enhance passenger convenience, ensuring a more efficient travel experience for both residents and visitors.

The upgraded civil aviation facilities are expected to provide a major boost to tourism in the Leh sector, creating new economic opportunities and supporting local livelihoods. Improved air connectivity will also ensure more reliable and consistent air services, which are vital for a region with limited surface transport options.

In addition to supporting tourism and civilian travel, the enhanced infrastructure will strengthen Leh’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, reinforcing the region’s preparedness during emergencies.

Overall, the project is a meaningful contribution to Ladakh’s long-term socio-economic development and underlines the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in strategically important and geographically challenging regions.
