Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi Appointed as New Vice Chancellor of BHU

Varanasi : President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, a distinguished academician from IIT Kanpur, as the new Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). His tenure will last for three years from the date he assumes office or until he turns 70, whichever is earlier.

Prof. Chaturvedi brings a deep connection to BHU, having served as a professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at IIT-BHU from 1994 to 1996. With this appointment, he becomes the 29th Vice Chancellor of one of India’s most prestigious universities.

A Veteran in India’s Premier Institutes

Prof. Chaturvedi holds B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, where he studied from 1986 to 1995. After his initial stint at IIT-BHU, he joined IIT Roorkee as a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, later moving to IIT Kanpur in 1999. There, he served in several key roles including Head of the Electrical Engineering Department, Dean of Research and Development, and Deputy Director.

In 2012, he was elevated to the rank of Professor and held the Sanjay and Rachna Pradhan Chair Professorship from 2015 to 2017. He was appointed Director of IIT Roorkee in January 2017, a position he held until October 2022, after which he returned to IIT Kanpur.

Recognitions and Contributions

Prof. Chaturvedi is a recipient of the INSA Teachers Award, Distinguished Teacher Award from IIT Kanpur, and the Tan Chin Tuan Fellowship from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also a founding member of the Telecom Standards Development Society of India (TSDSI).

His appointment is being seen as a strategic move to bolster BHU’s standing in technical education and research. With extensive administrative experience and academic excellence, Prof. Chaturvedi is expected to bring renewed vision and leadership to BHU’s academic ecosystem.
