Lucknow — In a stirring blend of sport and patriotism, Avisha Sporting Club, Lucknow is set to launch “Prerna Cup Season 1”, a prestigious cricket tournament held in memory of the late Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, Param Vir Chakra awardee and one of India’s most revered war heroes.
The tournament is scheduled to begin on July 3, a date of deep national significance marking Captain Pandey’s martyrdom day, commemorating his extraordinary sacrifice during the Kargil War. The initiative seeks not only to celebrate cricket but also to instill a deeper appreciation for the valor and commitment of India’s armed forces.
“A soldier’s sacrifice is not just his story — it is our shared responsibility,” reads the powerful message at the heart of the Prerna Cup.
Participation and Format
The event brings together 29 top-tier corporate cricket teams from Lucknow, alongside a special team representing the Indian Army—comprising veterans, fellow officers, and soldiers who served with Captain Pandey.
Their participation promises an emotional and inspiring experience for players and spectators alike. It symbolizes the unity between the civilian and military communities and shines a spotlight on the human stories behind military service.
Beyond Cricket: A National Purpose
Organizers of the Prerna Cup emphasize that the event goes far beyond cricket. The tournament has been designed with a strong social and patriotic message:
-
To inspire the youth and professionals with the legacy of Captain Manoj Pandey
-
To connect civil society and the corporate world with the stories and sacrifices of India’s soldiers
-
To promote social unity, harmony, and a collective national consciousness
“This is not just about runs and wickets,” said Ravindra Sinha, President of Avisha Sporting Club. “It’s about inspiring a generation with the values of sacrifice, service, and unity that Captain Pandey embodied.”
Honouring a Hero
Captain Manoj Pandey, a native of Rudauli, Uttar Pradesh, was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award, for his fearless leadership in the face of extreme adversity during the Kargil conflict. His story remains a beacon of courage and selflessness.

By naming the tournament in his honor, organizers hope to immortalize his legacy in the hearts of young Indians, particularly in the sporting community.
The Army Joins In
The participation of the Indian Army team brings a special emotional dimension to the tournament. Spectators will not only witness their skills on the cricket field but also engage with men who served alongside Captain Pandey, offering an authentic glimpse into his life, ideals, and leadership.
Col. (Retd) R.K. Tiwari, who once served under Pandey’s command, said,
“Manoj was not just a soldier — he was a symbol of fearless commitment. Through the Prerna Cup, his courage will echo in every run, every cheer, and every heart.”
A Call to Action
As the countdown to July 3 begins, the Prerna Cup is fast becoming a community-driven movement, urging citizens to turn patriotism from sentiment into action.
From cricket lovers to ex-servicemen, corporate leaders to young students, the tournament is inviting all of Lucknow — and India — to be part of this historic tribute.
Prerna Cup Season 1 is more than a cricket competition.
It is a living salute to a fallen hero, a platform for social unity, and a reminder that while soldiers protect the borders, it is up to every citizen to carry forward their legacy.
