PM Modi to Participate Virtually in ASEAN Summit; Malaysian Visit Postponed

NEW DELHI/KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate virtually in the upcoming ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit, which is being held in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28. The decision to attend online comes as Modi’s planned visit to Malaysia has been postponed, confirmed Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Sharing the update on social media, PM Modi wrote, “Had a warm conversation with my dear friend, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. I congratulated him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and wished success for the upcoming summits. I look forward to participating virtually in the ASEAN-India Summit and further strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also confirmed the call, noting that the leaders discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, technology, education, and regional security. Modi informed Ibrahim that he will join the 47th ASEAN Summit virtually due to the ongoing festival season in India. In his absence, India may be represented by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar at the summit.

This marks another effort to maintain high-level engagement between India and ASEAN nations while balancing domestic priorities during the festive period.
