Varanasi: Varanasi is set to get a landmark civic infrastructure project as a new municipal council building, inspired by the themes of Kashi and the Ganga, will be constructed at the Sigra headquarters of the Varanasi Municipal Corporation. The proposed structure, estimated to cost around ₹97 crore, will be designed in the shape of a Shivling, symbolising the city’s deep spiritual heritage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone of the ambitious project. The construction responsibility has been assigned to C&DS, Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, under the EPC mode, with a target completion timeline of 15 months.
The G+4 building, with a total built-up area of over 21,800 square metres, will house a grand council hall with seating capacity for 180 corporators, along with the offices of the Mayor, Municipal Commissioner, and other key officials. A digital data centre, modern server rooms, public service counters, tax collection rooms, and citizen facilities will be integrated within the same complex.

The project aims to blend modern governance infrastructure with the cultural identity of Kashi, emerging as a new symbol of urban development in the holy city.
