PM Modi Inaugurates M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference

NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference at the ICAR-Pusa campus today. The event celebrated the legacy of the renowned agricultural scientist, often called the “Father of the Green Revolution in India.”

A Tribute to a “Son of Mother India”

In his address, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to Professor M.S. Swaminathan, stating that some personalities’ contributions transcend a single era. He described Swaminathan as a “great personality and a son of Mother India who made science a medium for public service.” Modi said that Swaminathan’s vision would continue to guide India’s policies and priorities for centuries to come, and he extended his best wishes for the centenary celebrations.

The Prime Minister also noted that the day marked National Handloom Day, congratulating the handloom community for the new recognition and strength the sector has gained over the past decade.

Honoring a Legacy

To honor Swaminathan’s memory, Prime Minister Modi released a commemorative coin and a centenary commemorative stamp.

Recalling his personal connection with the professor, Modi shared an anecdote from his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat. He explained how the state’s agriculture faced severe challenges from droughts and cyclones. When the Gujarat government launched the Soil Health Card scheme, Swaminathan showed immense interest and provided “open-hearted suggestions and guidance.” Modi credited Swaminathan’s contribution for the initiative’s “tremendous success.”

Modi stated that every meeting with Swaminathan was a valuable learning experience. He highlighted the professor’s belief that “science is not just about discovery, but about delivery.” According to the Prime Minister, Swaminathan proved this through his actions, not only conducting research but also inspiring farmers to change their farming methods.

Beyond the Green Revolution

The Prime Minister acknowledged that while Swaminathan led the campaign to make India self-sufficient in food grains, his identity extended far beyond the Green Revolution. Swaminathan, he said, consistently warned farmers about the dangers of increasing chemical use and monoculture farming.

Concluding his speech, Prime Minister Modi said he considered it his great fortune that his government had the opportunity to honor Dr. Swaminathan with the Bharat Ratna.
