Toronto: In a significant endorsement of India’s rising stature on the world stage, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence at the G7 Summit as a “reflection of India’s economic size, dynamism, and leadership in global affairs.”
Speaking at a press conference at the conclusion of the G7 Leaders’ Summit held in Canada, Carney emphasized that Modi’s continued participation in G7 summits since 2018 reflects not only India’s growing economic and technological influence but also its increasing role in shaping global agendas beyond the G20.
“PM Modi’s presence at the G7 is entirely natural and consistent. It reflects the size and vitality of the Indian economy, India’s technological strength, and its leadership position in multiple global platforms. As G7 chair, it is an honour to host him,” Carney said.
He further added that he hopes to see Prime Minister Modi at the G7 again next year, indicating a desire for continued cooperation and dialogue with India.
Key Diplomatic Meeting Amid Past Tensions
Mark Carney also described his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi as “important,” highlighting plans to move forward with the appointment of new High Commissioners. The move signals a possible thaw in diplomatic relations between India and Canada, which had deteriorated sharply over the past year.
The relationship took a downturn following allegations made by the previous Canadian administration under Justin Trudeau, linking India to the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In response, India recalled its High Commissioner and five other diplomats, while expelling an equal number of Canadian envoys. New Delhi had strongly criticized Trudeau’s government for allowing pro-Khalistan activities on Canadian soil.
However, with Carney now at the helm in Ottawa, the diplomatic tone has shifted. India had expressed optimism after Trudeau’s departure, suggesting that bilateral relations could be restored on a more constructive note.
Carney’s statements and his warm engagement with Modi at the G7 are being seen as a fresh start, with both nations possibly entering a phase of reconciliation and renewed collaboration in global matters.
