Pahalgam Attack Injures Tourists: J&K Security on High Alert

Pahalgam, J&K: A terrorist incident in the popular hill resort of Pahalgam, located in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in injuries to five individuals on Tuesday. Among those wounded were three tourists, according to police sources.

The attack reportedly occurred in the Baisran area of Pahalgam, where terrorists opened fire on a group comprising both visitors and local residents. Initial reports indicate that five people sustained injuries – two locals and three tourists – and are currently receiving medical treatment. Security forces swiftly responded to the scene, and further details are awaited as the investigation unfolds.

This incident marks the first terrorist attack targeting tourists in the Kashmir Valley this year, despite the region currently experiencing a robust tourism season. Srinagar city and prominent destinations like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg have reported full hotel occupancy, reflecting a significant influx of visitors. Official projections had anticipated a record-breaking two crore tourist arrivals in J&K this year.

The attack unfortunately coincides with the commencement of nationwide registration for the Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3 and conclude on August 9.

In response to the ongoing security situation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had recently conducted a high-level security review meeting in J&K last month, emphasizing the complete elimination of terrorism, particularly in the Jammu division, and stressing a zero-tolerance policy towards infiltration.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has also underscored the necessity of dismantling the entire terrorist ecosystem in J&K, which includes not only active terrorists but also their overground workers and supporters. Authorities are expected to intensify security measures in the wake of this attack to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists in the region.
