New Census 2027 to Go Beyond Caste Data, Assess Socio-Economic Conditions

Lucknow – The upcoming census in 2027 will not be limited to collecting caste-based data but will also undertake a comprehensive assessment of the socio-economic conditions across the country. For the first time, acid attack survivors and displaced individuals will also be included in the enumeration.

While discussions have primarily focused on caste-based data for the 2027 census, the reality is that the exercise will encompass a broader measure of the nation’s economic and social development. The House and House Listing Survey, which precedes the main census, will incorporate several questions designed to gather this information. Census enumerators will visit households to inquire about the primary grain consumed (wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, millet).

Furthermore, the survey will ascertain the number of individuals primarily using bottled or packaged water. Questions related to LPG/PNG connections and the type of cooking fuel used will also be included, with solar energy being added as an option for the first time. The census will also count households utilizing free dish, DTH, or other cable connections.

Inclusion of Acid Attack Survivors and Displaced Persons:

A significant new addition to the 2027 census is the separate enumeration of acid attack survivors. Similarly, individuals affected by chronic neurological diseases and blood disorders will also be counted distinctly. For the first time, natural disasters have been added as a reason for displacement in the census of displaced persons. These new questions are particularly significant as this census will be conducted after the COVID-19 pandemic, during which a large number of people were believed to have been displaced.
