Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi: Indian Navy Maintains Vigil Across IOR, No Concerns Over Chinese Research Ships

New Delhi: Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, has affirmed that the Indian Navy closely monitors all activity across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), dismissing concerns regarding Chinese research vessels operating in international waters.

Admiral Tripathi emphasized that the Navy’s vigilance is comprehensive and extends to all nations, not just China. He noted that the Navy responds to developments according to government directives, maintaining a posture of strategic awareness rather than alarm.

He highlighted that in international waters beyond 200 nautical miles, freedom of navigation prevails, and such presence is routine, given that oceans cover 71 percent of the Earth’s surface. Responding to reports linking missile test delays to a Chinese spy ship, Admiral Tripathi stated that such claims are largely speculative and may stem from misinterpretation or misinformation.

Acknowledging past cases, he said that occasional survey or satellite-tracking vessels have required adjustments to Indian operations, a standard practice globally amid strategic maritime considerations.

On naval modernization, the Chief outlined efforts to accelerate the construction of four Landing Platform Docks (LPDs), each over 20,000 tonnes, through parallel processing reforms. Additionally, clearance has been granted for 60 Naval Utility Helicopters (NUH) via Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), enhancing rotary-wing operational capabilities.

These remarks came ahead of Navy Day on December 4, commemorating the 1971 strikes on Karachi. Celebrations this year are set for Shangumugham Beach, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, where President Droupadi Murmu will oversee a grand operational demonstration featuring coordinated manoeuvres by ships, submarines, and aircraft, showcasing India’s maritime strength and multi-domain integration.

Admiral Tripathi’s statements reinforce the Navy’s readiness, self-reliance, and strategic dominance in the IOR under the MAHASAGAR vision.
