Lucknow – Narayana Health City, a leading name in advanced cardiothoracic care and organ transplantation, held a landmark press conference in Lucknow today, where a panel of four eminent doctors, Dr. Aditi Singhvi, Dr. Syed Tousheed, Dr. Bagirath R, and Dr. Julius Punnen, discussed two complex case studies highlighting the institution’s excellence in patient care, cutting-edge medical treatments, and the complexities of organ transplant.
The first case discussed was that of a 66-year old male patient from Kanpur, who had an angioplasty, but continued to struggle with severely reduced ejection fraction (25%) causing inability to function and recurrent hospitalizations. After a thorough evaluation, the medical team, led by Dr. Aditi Singhvi, Clinical Lead for Adult Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiologist at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, determined that the patient required a heart transplant.

As per standard protocol, the patient was registered as a candidate for heart transplant. Upon availability of a suitable donor in October 2023, the transplant was performed successfully. Today, more than one-year post-transplant, the patient has made remarkable progress, leading a healthy, active life. Dr. Singhvi and other experts from Narayana Health, Dr. Bagirath R, Dr. Varun Shetty, Dr. Julius Punnen, and Dr. Kumaran T, shared their insights on the complexities involved in transplant surgeries and the importance of post-operative care in such critical cases.
“It’s always a moment of immense satisfaction when we see our patients thriving after such a high-stakes procedure,” said Dr. Singhvi. “Heart transplantation requires meticulous planning, but with a dedicated team and state-of-the-art facilities, we can offer the best possible care to the patients.”
The patient, Mr. Rajesh Kumar (name changed for confidentiality), shared his gratitude: “When I first learned about my condition, I felt hopeless. But thanks to the team at Narayana Health City, I was given a second chance at life. The transplant has completely transformed my health. I’m able to do things now that I never thought I would be able to do again.”
The second case presented was that of a 30-year-old woman, Ms. Ayesha Malik (name changed for confidentiality), who was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect known as sinus venosus atrial septal defect with a partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC). This condition had progressed leading to life-threatening complications.
Ms. Malik had suffered from recurrent hospitalizations and bouts of coughing up blood. Despite initial management with oxygen therapy and medical intervention, the severity of her condition progressed, prompting the medical team to recommend a combined heart and lung transplant. She was listed for transplant in January 2023 and in December 2023, she was fortunate to receive a suitable donor for both organs.

The transplant was a success, and today Ms. Malik is doing well. Dr. Basha J. Khan, Senior Consultant & Director Lung Transplants, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, who was closely involved in her care, emphasized the importance of early detection and the life-saving impact of combined heart and lung transplantation in patients with end-stage disease.
“Ms. Malik’s case is a classic example of how integrated care from multiple specialties—cardiology, pulmonology, and transplant surgery—can make all the difference,” Dr. Khan said. “This was a highly complex transplant, but thanks to our multidisciplinary team with clinical leads like Dr. Shreesha Maiya, Dr. Shashiraj, Dr. Varun Shetty, and Dr. Julius Punnen, we were able to offer her a second chance at life.”
Speaking from her perspective, Ms. Malik shared, “I had lost all hope for a normal life. The transplant has given me a new beginning, and I am incredibly grateful to the entire medical team for their support and care.”
The team at Narayana Health City remains committed to providing the highest standards of care for complex cardiothoracic and transplant cases, employing state-of-the-art technology, advanced medical protocols, and compassionate patient care to ensure the best outcomes.
