Lucknow: In a decisive step to strengthen law-and-order mechanisms, the Yogi Adityanath government has approved the purchase of modern Vajra riot-control vehicles worth ₹9.70 crore for the Uttar Pradesh Police. The move aims to reinforce police readiness in sensitive districts and empower forces to respond swiftly and effectively during emergency situations.
According to officials, the enhanced fleet of Vajra vehicles—equipped with advanced protective features and crowd-control systems—will significantly expand the police’s capability to maintain peace in areas prone to unrest or sudden flare-ups.
Why the New Vehicles Are Needed
Authorities noted that the police often face challenging situations while preserving public order across the state. The Vajra vehicles, designed to withstand heavy stone-pelting and violent mob situations, will provide crucial support to personnel on the ground.
Last year, the state government had sanctioned funds for 41 riot-control vehicles, marking a sustained focus on modernising the police fleet.

Key Cabinet Decisions
Alongside the approval for Vajra vehicles, the state cabinet cleared several other proposals, including:
- Presentation of the 2019–20 Annual Report of the Directorate of Cooperative Societies and Panchayat Audit before the State Legislature.
- Approval for the purchase of 14 new vehicles to replace 14 auctioned staff-pool vehicles of the State Property Department.
A Push for Stronger Law Enforcement
Officials emphasised that the introduction of additional Vajra vehicles aligns with the Yogi government’s broader strategy to modernise Uttar Pradesh Police with advanced equipment and ensure swift response in situations threatening public safety.
With this approval, the UP Police is set to receive a major tactical upgrade—one that could make a substantial difference in handling high-risk crowd situations and maintaining law and order across the state.
