Metaphor LitFest: Exploring the Legacy of Parallel Cinema

Lucknow — The Metaphor Literature Festival hosted a thought-provoking discussion on the Pillars of Parallel Cinema, featuring Dr. Jaya Srivastava, Nawal Shukla, Dr. OP Srivastava, and journalist Satya.

Dr. Jaya Srivastava opened by celebrating Lucknow’s rich cultural and cinematic heritage, referencing iconic films like Pakeezah and Umrao Jaan. Nawal Shukla highlighted the transformative period of Indian cinema from 1960 to 1999, where parallel cinema emerged as “aam aadmi ka cinema,” though often appreciated by elites.

Dr. OP Srivastava traced the roots of parallel cinema to the 1955 SK Patil Committee, which led to the creation of FTII and FFC to support independent films. He contrasted big-budget blockbusters like Sholay (₹2 crores) with small-budget gems like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (₹7 lakhs), noting their emotional resonance despite financial limitations. He lamented the dominance of mainstream films today, leaving little space for independent filmmakers in theatres.

Satya highlighted how the addition of songs broadened the appeal of parallel cinema and noted OTT platforms’ current blend of realism and commercial elements. The session concluded with a critical look at the challenges faced by parallel cinema, from budget constraints to limited audiences.

The panel left audiences reflecting on the enduring legacy and future of independent filmmaking in India.
