New Delhi: India has suffered a major setback before the Paris Olympics 2024. Six-time world champion Indian boxer MC Mary Kom has resigned from the post of Chef de Mission. Mary Kom resigned from the post citing personal reasons.

Request was made by writing a letter to IOA President

MC Mary Kom, who was appointed as the Chef-de-Mission of the Indian team last month, has written a letter to the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Dr. PT Usha, requesting her to be relieved from the post. In her letter, Mary Kom said she is grateful to the Indian Olympic Association for reposing confidence in her to serve as the Chef de Mission at Paris 2024.

Resigned due to personal reasons

Mary Kom wrote in her letter, “I consider it an honor to serve my country in every possible way and I was mentally prepared for it.” However, I am sad that I will not be able to take up this prestigious responsibility and would like to resign due to personal reasons.” It is embarrassing to back out of a commitment, which I rarely do, but I have no option. Mary Kom further wrote in the letter, “I will be there with great expectations to cheer for my country and the athletes participating in this Olympic Games.”

IOA chief PT Usha said, “We are saddened that Olympic medalist boxer and IOA Athletes Commission Chairperson Mary Kom has stepped down citing personal reasons. We respect her decision and her privacy.” I will provide proper consultation and announce Mary Kom’s replacement soon.”

PT Usha further said, “I can understand her request and respect her decision. I have also told her that she will always have my and the IOA’s support. I ask everyone to respect the privacy of the great boxer.”

Won bronze in 2012 London Olympics

It is noteworthy that the 41-year-old boxer has represented the country in two editions of the Olympic Games (2012 London and 2020), winning a bronze medal at the 2012 Games in London but missing out on a medal at the Tokyo Games. Actually, the Paris Olympic Games are going to be held in Paris, the capital of France, from 26 July to 11 August.
