Lucknow – The city of Nawabs, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and intricate textile traditions, is witnessing a surge in interest among its youth toward fashion designing. This growing demand is transforming Lucknow into a burgeoning hub for creative talent, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary trends.
Local institutes like the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and private academies such as the Institute of Fashion Design in Gomti Nagar report a significant rise in enrollments. “We’ve seen a 30% increase in applications over the past two years,” says Priya Sharma, a course coordinator at NIFT Lucknow. “Young people are drawn to the creative freedom and global opportunities in fashion designing.”
The influence of social media is a key driver. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have inspired Gen Z to experiment with styles, from fusion wear to sustainable fashion. “Social media influencers showcase trends like oversized shirts and drop-shoulder designs, which are huge in Lucknow right now,” notes Firoz Khan, a boutique owner in Hazratganj, citing the popularity of affordable, stylish clothing sourced from Delhi and Mumbai.
Lucknow’s textile legacy, including Chikankari and Zardozi, plays a pivotal role. Young designers are reimagining these crafts for modern wardrobes, attracting both domestic and international markets. “Our students are blending Chikankari with minimalist silhouettes, which is a hit at fashion weeks,” says Anjali Verma, a faculty member at a local design school.
The city’s vibrant fashion scene is further fueled by events like the Dastak Youth Festival, which recently highlighted young designers’ collections themed around cultural tourism. Such platforms provide exposure, encouraging aspiring designers to showcase their work. However, challenges remain, including limited access to high-end production facilities and competition from established fashion hubs like Mumbai and Delhi.

Despite these hurdles, the entrepreneurial spirit is strong. Many graduates are launching their own labels, leveraging e-commerce and quick commerce to reach wider audiences. “The USD 100 billion Indian textile market offers immense opportunities, and Lucknow’s youth are capitalizing on it,” says Rohan Gupta, a market analyst.
As Lucknow balances its storied past with a dynamic future, its youth are stitching a new narrative in fashion, one that promises creativity, sustainability, and global appeal.
