Lucknow: Winter Camp Strengthens Voices of Marginalized Schoolgirls

Lucknow: In an effort to nurture confidence, awareness and leadership among adolescent girls, the Study Hall Educational Foundation (SHEF), in partnership with the HCL Foundation, concluded a three-day Girls’ Winter Camp in Lucknow. The residential programme brought together students from eight Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), creating a safe and engaging space for learning beyond the classroom.

Designed to empower girls from marginalised communities, the camp focused on building essential life skills, encouraging critical thinking, and fostering self-expression. Through interactive workshops, group discussions and creative activities, participants were encouraged to reflect on their rights, aspirations and personal strengths.

A series of expert-led sessions addressed crucial social and legal issues affecting young girls, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, gender equality, and the prevention of child marriage. Facilitators emphasised the importance of awareness and informed decision-making, enabling students to better understand their rights and responsibilities.

Educators and mentors associated with the camp highlighted that such initiatives play a vital role in shaping confident and informed young citizens. By providing a supportive environment for open dialogue, the programme helped participants articulate their thoughts, challenge stereotypes and develop a sense of agency.

Students also took part in activities aimed at improving communication skills, teamwork and problem-solving abilities. Many participants shared that the camp helped them overcome hesitation, boosted their self-confidence, and inspired them to dream bigger for their futures.

Organisers noted that the Winter Camp is part of a broader commitment to ensuring equitable education and holistic development for girls, especially those from underserved backgrounds. The successful conclusion of the programme reinforces the importance of sustained community-based efforts in empowering the next generation of young women.
