Lucknow — As part of the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations, the Department of Yoga under the Faculty of Yoga and Alternative Medicine at the University of Lucknow organized a special seminar focused on “Yoga for Obesity Management”.
The seminar aimed to raise awareness about the growing concern of obesity and how yoga can be an effective solution for its prevention and control. Pooja Singh, a noted Yoga Acharya from Lucknow, was the keynote speaker. She highlighted that specific yoga postures such as Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Markat Asana, Udarakarshan Asana, and Malasana, along with breathing techniques like Anulom Vilom, Kapalbhati, Ujjayi, and Bhramari Pranayama, can significantly benefit individuals dealing with obesity.
Dr. Amarjeet Yadav, Coordinator of the Faculty, emphasized that obesity weakens the immune system, making individuals more prone to ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. He recommended practices like Agnisaar Kriya and Surya Namaskar as effective tools in managing excessive weight.
In a parallel initiative, a special yoga camp for pregnant women was also held at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, King George’s Medical University (KGMU).
Yoga instructors Priyanjali Pandey, Monika Singh, and Preeti Manuj guided the expecting mothers through gentle and beneficial asanas including Janu Sirsasana, Marjari Asana, Setubandhasana, Supta Baddhakonasana, and Butterfly Asana. The session also included calming Pranayama practices like Nadi Shodhan, Bhramari, Sheetali, and Sheetkari, followed by a short meditation.
The seminar and yoga sessions witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members and students, reaffirming the growing recognition of yoga as a holistic approach to physical and mental well-being.
The event successfully underlined the role of yoga not just as a preventive health practice, but also as a lifestyle tool for managing chronic conditions like obesity — sending a strong message in line with this year’s International Yoga Day theme.
