Lucknow: In a major step towards modernising traffic management, the Lucknow Police has launched a high-tech trial using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled drones to monitor congestion near the Ekana Cricket Stadium.
The initiative aims to ease traffic snarls, particularly during large events, by enabling real-time surveillance and quicker response by traffic personnel.
AI-Powered Monitoring for Faster Action
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Raveena Tyagi, drones equipped with AI-based camera software are being deployed over key stretches around the stadium. These drones continuously analyse vehicle movement, traffic density, and speed patterns.
“The system is designed to automatically detect congestion. Whenever long queues or disruptions are identified, alerts are instantly sent to the control room,” she said.
Upon receiving alerts, nearby traffic teams are dispatched promptly to manage and clear the congestion, reducing delays and improving overall traffic flow.
High-Resolution Surveillance and Live Feed
The drones are fitted with high-resolution cameras and advanced sensors that transmit live video feeds directly to the control room. This allows officials to assess ground conditions without physically being present, saving crucial time and enabling swift decision-making.
Officials believe that the use of AI will significantly enhance the efficiency of traffic monitoring by minimizing manual intervention and ensuring proactive management.
Pilot Project with Expansion Plans
The trial has been initiated around the Ekana Stadium area, known for heavy traffic during matches and events. If successful, the technology will be expanded to other congested zones across Lucknow.
The move is expected to not only streamline traffic during peak hours and public events but also strengthen the city’s broader smart policing framework.

With rising vehicular pressure in urban centres, the adoption of AI-driven solutions marks a shift towards data-driven policing. The Lucknow Police hopes that such innovations will lead to more efficient traffic regulation, reduced congestion, and improved commuter experience in the city.
