Lucknow Mayor Cracks Down on Waste Management Lapses, Issues Strict Directives

Lucknow | In a decisive move to streamline the city’s waste management system, Lucknow Municipal Corporation convened a high-level review meeting at its headquarters on Wednesday. The meeting, chaired by Mayor Sushma Kharkwal, focused on improving garbage collection, transportation, and disposal mechanisms across the city.

Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar was also present as officials conducted a detailed review of sanitation operations and identified key gaps in execution.

Senior Officials Participate in Review

The meeting saw participation from senior officials including Additional Municipal Commissioners Lalit Kumar, Pankaj Srivastava, Arun Kumar Gupta, and Dr. Arvind Kumar Rao, along with Jal Kal GM Kuldeep Singh and Municipal Health Officer P.K. Srivastava. Zonal officers, sanitary officials, and representatives from Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan and Lion Enviro were also present.

The Mayor stressed the need for better coordination among departments to accelerate sanitation efforts.

Mayor Expresses Concern Over Door-to-Door Collection

During the zonal review, the Mayor expressed strong dissatisfaction over irregular door-to-door garbage collection. Despite the deployment of collection vehicles, complaints of uncollected waste and overflowing garbage points continue to persist in several areas.

She questioned officials on the inefficiency, asking why garbage was not being picked up from households when vehicles were operational in those zones.

Daily Monitoring and Location Tracking Mandated

In a bid to enforce accountability, the Mayor directed that daily monitoring of zonal and sanitary officials will now be conducted from the control room. Officials have been instructed to share their real-time location.

Failure to update location within five minutes will attract strict कार्रवाई, including deduction of one day’s salary.

Early Morning Field Inspections Made Mandatory

The Mayor also instructed all Additional Municipal Commissioners to conduct mandatory field inspections in their respective zones every day at 6 a.m. She emphasized that on-ground monitoring is crucial to assess the actual situation and ensure improvements in cleanliness.

Strict Action Against Garbage Dumping

The Mayor warned that if garbage is found dumped at unauthorized locations in wards where designated collection points (padav ghars) already exist, strict action will be taken against the concerned zonal and sanitary officers.

She also directed agencies like Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan and Lion Enviro to complete all pending padav ghar projects by April 30, failing which stringent action will follow.

Crackdown on Illegal Waste Carts

Highlighting another concern, the Mayor instructed officials to take strict action against unauthorized garbage carts operating in their zones. Any such activity must lead to immediate seizure and registration of FIRs against those responsible.

Warning to Negligent Agencies

Expressing displeasure over the performance of certain executing agencies, the Mayor warned that any organization found negligent in its duties will be blacklisted without delay. She made it clear that no laxity will be tolerated in maintaining the city’s cleanliness standards.

Swift Disposal of C&D Waste

The Mayor also issued clear instructions regarding the disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Officials have been directed to photograph such waste wherever found and immediately forward the images to the concerned municipal engineer, as well as to the Mayor and Municipal Commissioner, ensuring prompt action.

The meeting concluded with a firm message from the civic leadership—strict monitoring, accountability, and swift action will be the cornerstones of Lucknow’s push towards a cleaner and more efficient waste management system.
