Liverpool Retires Number 20 Shirt to Honour Diogo Jota After Tragic Accident

Liverpool – In a deeply emotional gesture, Liverpool Football Club has announced the retirement of the number 20 jersey across all its teams, including LFC Women and the Academy, in memory of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away last week in a car accident in Spain.

The 28-year-old, known for his fierce determination and attacking brilliance, lost his life alongside his brother, André Silva, in Zamora, Spain. Authorities stated that the car veered off the road due to a tire malfunction, leading to a fatal fire.

In a heartfelt statement, Liverpool said, “It was the number he wore with pride and distinction, leading us to countless victories. Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club’s number 20.”

The club emphasized that this decision was not only a tribute to Jota’s contribution on the pitch since joining in 2020, but also a reflection of the deep connections he forged with teammates, staff, and fans. “This is a singular homage to a singularly exceptional individual,” said Michael Edwards, CEO of Football at FSG.

Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family were closely involved in the decision-making process, underlining the club’s commitment to honoring his memory with dignity.

During his time at Liverpool, Jota helped the team lift the Premier League title, two EFL Cups, and the FA Cup. Internationally, he earned 49 caps and 14 goals for Portugal and was part of the squads that won the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

A tribute will be held during Liverpool’s upcoming friendly against Preston North End to honour both Diogo and André Silva.
