Let Us Together Empower India’s Nari Shakti

By Narendra Modi

India today stands at a defining moment in its development journey. In the coming days, we are set to witness a historic step that will further strengthen our democracy and reaffirm our commitment to equality, inclusion, and public participation. It is a moment when our Parliament is called upon to take a transformative decision—one that will make our democratic institutions more representative and participatory by ensuring greater involvement of women.

This moment becomes even more special as it arrives during a time filled with celebration, hope, and positivity across the nation. From Rongali Bihu in Assam to Poila Baisakh in West Bengal, from Vishu in Kerala to Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, and Baisakhi in northern India, these festivals bring with them renewed energy and optimism. I extend my heartfelt greetings to all those celebrating these auspicious occasions in India and around the world.

We are also reminded of the enduring legacy of great social reformers such as Jyotirao Phule and B. R. Ambedkar, whose birth anniversaries inspire us to uphold the values of social justice and human dignity. Their vision continues to guide us as we strive to build an inclusive and equitable society.

Amidst these inspiring occasions, the upcoming session of Parliament holds special significance. The discussion and passage of measures related to women’s reservation is not merely a legislative exercise—it is a reflection of the aspirations of millions of women across our nation. Our Nari Shakti, representing nearly half of our population, has been a driving force in India’s growth story. From science and technology to entrepreneurship, from sports to the armed forces, and from arts to innovation, women are leading from the front and shaping the future of our country.

Our cultural ethos has always recognised that a society can truly progress only when its women are empowered with equal opportunities. Over the past years, continuous efforts have been made to create an enabling environment for women—be it through improved access to education, better healthcare, financial inclusion, or enhanced basic amenities. These efforts have strengthened women’s participation in economic and social life.

Yet, it is equally important to acknowledge that women’s representation in political and legislative institutions has not kept pace with their contributions to society. This gap must now be addressed. When women actively participate in governance and decision-making, their perspectives enrich discussions and lead to more balanced and effective policies. Increasing their representation is not just about numbers—it is about making our democracy more sensitive, more inclusive, and more responsive.

For decades, there have been discussions and efforts to ensure adequate representation for women in legislative bodies. While there has been broad consensus on the need for this reform, its implementation has remained pending. The passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in 2023 was a significant milestone, and now the time has come to translate that vision into reality in the upcoming elections.

This is not the responsibility of any one government, party, or individual. It is a national responsibility. It calls for collective resolve and consensus, keeping in mind the larger interest of the nation. Some decisions transcend time—they shape the future of generations and define the direction of our democracy.

Today, as India moves forward with confidence and determination, it is imperative that our institutions reflect the aspirations of all citizens, especially our women. Empowering Nari Shakti is not just a policy priority; it is a moral and national duty.

I urge all Members of Parliament and all stakeholders to come together in support of this important step. Let us rise above differences and work unitedly to strengthen our democracy. Let us ensure that our Nari Shakti gets the representation and opportunities it truly deserves.

Together, let us build a more inclusive, just, and progressive India.
