Left and Democratic Groups Hold Meeting in Lucknow, Condemn U.S.–Israeli Military Action Against Iran

Lucknow: A joint meeting of Left and democratic organizations was held at the Lal Kuan office of Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation in Lucknow, where participants strongly condemned the ongoing U.S.–Israeli military strikes on Iran. The meeting denounced the reported targeted killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several senior Iranian officials, describing the actions as a grave threat to international law, national sovereignty and global peace.

Speakers at the meeting stated that such unilateral military interventions undermine the spirit of the United Nations Charter and risk normalizing extrajudicial aggression by powerful nations. They argued that the attacks should be viewed not as an isolated response to a specific incident but as part of a broader geopolitical strategy aimed at asserting dominance in strategically significant regions.

The meeting was chaired by Uday Nath Singh of the All India Forward Bloc. Among those present were Ramesh Singh Sengar (CPI-ML Liberation), Madhusudan Magan (AICCTU), Rajeev Gupta (RYA), Sohit Yadav (Jan Jagrukta Abhiyan), K.K. Shukla (All India Workers Council) and Shantam Nidhi (AISA).

Participants passed a formal condolence resolution expressing grief over the reported death of Ayatollah Khamenei, the loss of Iranian civilians, and all those injured or killed in the strikes. The gathering expressed solidarity with the people of Iran, stating that collective punishment, targeting of national leadership and actions resulting in civilian casualties are contrary to international humanitarian law and democratic principles.

The organizations emphasized that civilian casualties cannot be dismissed as “collateral damage,” asserting that such actions violate both international legal norms and the fundamental right of people to live free from foreign military coercion.

The meeting called upon the Government of India to adopt a clear and principled stand in favor of an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation and multilateral diplomatic engagement. Speakers noted that India’s foreign policy has historically been guided by anti-colonial values, non-alignment, respect for sovereignty and peaceful coexistence, and cautioned that ambiguity in the face of overt military aggression could weaken India’s strategic autonomy and moral standing.

While the focus remained on Iran, participants also expressed concern over other alleged violations of sovereignty globally, including actions taken against leaders of countries such as Venezuela. They maintained that any move undermining sovereign equality and international law must be opposed.

The meeting further urged the government to prioritize the safety of Indian citizens working in West Asia and to announce a transparent and time-bound evacuation and assistance plan if required. It also cautioned against passing on the economic burden of any potential oil crisis, inflation or instability arising from conflict onto workers, farmers and economically vulnerable sections.

The participating organizations resolved to build broader democratic public opinion against what they termed imperialist war, to campaign for peace and sovereignty, and to strengthen international solidarity with the people of Iran and other affected nations.
