KGMU Respiratory Medicine Department Honoured for Reporting Highest Adverse Drug Reactions

Lucknow: King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has added another feather to its cap, with its Respiratory Medicine Department receiving national recognition for reporting the highest number of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) this year. The honour was conferred during the National Pharmacovigilance Week – 2025, marking a significant milestone in patient safety and pharmacovigilance.

At a felicitation ceremony organised by the Department of Pharmacology, Professor Suryakant, Head of Respiratory Medicine, was felicitated along with Dr. Jyoti Bajpai and Dr. Ankit Kumar. The award was presented by Dr. Rakesh Kumar Dixit, Head of Pharmacology.

Prof. Suryakant expressed pride at the recognition, noting that the award reflects the department’s strong commitment to pharmacovigilance, patient safety, quality care, research, and social responsibility. He credited the achievement to teamwork and dedication towards medical science.

KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand congratulated the department, stating that the success showcases the university’s tradition of excellence in education, research, and patient service.

The Respiratory Medicine Department, established in 1946, is Uttar Pradesh’s oldest and largest centre for chest diseases. Under Prof. Suryakant’s leadership over the past decade, the department has earned several accolades, including contributions to KGMU’s recent NAAC A++ grade. It also runs the state’s first Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre, offering specialised physiotherapy for respiratory patients.

The department is internationally recognised as a WHO and Government of India Centre of Excellence for TB, and Prof. Suryakant has been ranked among the world’s top 2% scientists by Stanford University. It currently operates nine speciality clinics, including TB, post-COVID, lung cancer, and allergy clinics, and has expanded its facilities with advanced pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, and allergy labs.

Beyond treatment and research, the department actively engages in social responsibility initiatives such as adopting villages and children under the TB-free India campaign, providing support during COVID-19, and conducting health awareness through Radio Goonj.

The latest recognition for ADR reporting further cements KGMU’s role as a leader in medical innovation, patient safety, and community health.
