Lucknow — The Orthopedic Surgery Department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing a total hip replacement surgery using the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA), commonly known as the ‘bikini incision’ technique, for the first time. The patient has recovered well and is now able to walk normally.
Dr. Ravindra Mohan from the Orthopedic Surgery Department explained that 45-year-old Rajendra, a resident of Pratapgarh, had been suffering from severe hip pain for the past two years, which severely affected his daily activities. Despite trying multiple treatments and medications, he did not find lasting relief. He then approached KGMU, where doctors recommended a total hip replacement for his left hip.

The surgery was performed using the Direct Anterior Approach, which involves a small incision at the front of the hip. Unlike traditional techniques, this method avoids cutting muscles and instead gently moves them aside to access the joint. This results in less post-operative pain, faster wound healing, and quicker recovery, allowing patients to regain mobility sooner. The damaged hip joint was replaced with an artificial joint, relieving the patient’s pain and helping him return to a normal lifestyle.

The surgery was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Ashish Kumar, Head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department, with the surgical team comprising Dr. Sujit, Dr. Vivek, Dr. Vishal, and Dr. Amit. Dr. Brijesh Pratap Singh from the Anesthesia Department played a critical role during the procedure.
According to the doctors, the Direct Anterior Approach offers a safer and more patient-friendly option for hip replacement surgeries in the future.
