Successful pediatric surgery restores hope for family from Barabanki
Lucknow | Doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) have successfully performed a rare and complex surgery on a 7-year-old girl, giving her a new lease on life. The child, hailing from Ganga Pur Sansara Bijapur in Barabanki, was born without a proper anal passage. Since birth, she had been passing stool through the vaginal tract and also suffered from continuous urinary leakage.
Despite a surgery done in 2017, the condition persisted. Exhausted after multiple failed attempts at treatment, the child’s father brought her to KGMU’s Pediatric Surgery Department, where Head of Department Prof. J.D. Rawat promptly admitted her for comprehensive evaluation.
Ultrasound and nuclear scans revealed that her left kidney was extremely underdeveloped and non-functional, while the right kidney was functioning normally. The child was also suffering from uncontrolled high blood pressure, which was not responding to medication.

Minimally Invasive Surgical Milestone
Under the guidance of Prof. Rawat, a surgical plan was prepared and on July 28, the child underwent a laparoscopic nephroureterectomy — a procedure to remove the non-functioning kidney and its dilated ureter.
During surgery, doctors discovered that the left ureter was abnormally connected to the vagina, explaining the urine leakage since birth. The entire procedure was performed laparoscopically, making it less invasive and more efficient, especially for a pediatric patient.

“The surgery was completed successfully, and the child is now stable and recovering well,” said Prof. J.D. Rawat.
A Team Effort
The surgery was conducted by a team led by Prof. J.D. Rawat, Dr. Rahul Kumar Rai, and Dr. Manish Rajput. The anesthesia team was headed by Dr. Neel Kamal, with Nurse Sister Sudha assisting throughout the procedure.
The child’s family expressed deep satisfaction with the outcome, saying their daughter has finally found relief after years of struggle. This case marks another landmark achievement for KGMU’s Pediatric Surgery Department in delivering advanced, lifesaving care to children in need.
