Prayagraj: A new chapter began at IFFCO, the world’s leading fertilizer cooperative, as K.J. Patel officially took over as the new Managing Director. Patel’s appointment marks a significant transition, following the unparalleled, three-decade tenure of legendary cooperative leader Dr. U.S. Awasthi.
Dr. Awasthi is credited with transforming IFFCO into a global powerhouse. Under his visionary leadership, IFFCO pioneered groundbreaking innovations like Nano Urea, expanded its international footprint, and championed digital and sustainable agriculture. His dedication to farmers and the cooperative movement earned him prestigious accolades, including the “Rosedale Pioneer Award” and the title “Fertilizer Man of India.” Dr. Awasthi, who joined IFFCO in 1976 and served as MD from 1993 to 2025, made the organization a symbol of trust for farmers across the country.
A seasoned veteran of IFFCO, K.J. Patel is a mechanical engineer from Saurashtra University. He previously served as Technical Director and Unit Head of IFFCO’s Paradeep plant, where he was instrumental in improving production, technical innovation, and safety standards. His deep-rooted experience within the organization makes him an ideal successor.
Upon assuming his new role, Patel paid tribute to his predecessor, stating, “Dr. U.S. Awasthi has been a great visionary leader who made IFFCO a symbol of farmer service and innovation. His vision and roadmap provide a strong foundation for the years to come. I pledge to accelerate this vision and work in the interest of farmers with a cooperative spirit.”
In his farewell address, Dr. Awasthi expressed his satisfaction in passing the torch to “a capable colleague from our IFFCO family,” highlighting the cooperative’s strong commitment to nurturing internal talent.
