Journalists Protest Attack on Reporter

Lucknow: Senior journalists from the city staged a strong protest at the Gandhi Statue in Hazratganj, condemning the recent murderous attack on Sudarshan News journalist Sushil Awasthi Rajan. The protesting journalists raised slogans against the police administration and demanded the immediate arrest of the real attackers.

The demonstration was led by senior journalist Prabhat Tripathi, who warned that if the police fail to arrest the actual culprits soon, journalists would be compelled to march to the Chief Minister’s residence. He added that the increasing incidents of attacks on journalists are deeply alarming and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Senior journalist Shekhar Srivastava questioned the police’s handling of the case, alleging that the person arrested so far is “likely not the real attacker.” He said the action taken appears suspicious and raises concerns about the integrity of the investigation.

Member of the Uttar Pradesh Accredited Journalists Association, Anil Saini, accused the police of “trying to shield an influential person connected to those in power.” He warned that if such bias continues, the organisation would launch a statewide agitation.

Journalist Shyamal Tripathi expressed concern that reporters who courageously expose corruption or wrongdoing are increasingly becoming targets. He said such an environment makes independent and fearless journalism extremely difficult.

Senior journalist Kausar Jahan stressed the need for unity among journalists to expose elements who misuse political influence. She stated that attacks on journalists are, in essence, attacks on the democratic framework itself.

It is worth noting that journalist Sushil Awasthi had recently criticised the functioning of certain individuals linked with those in power. Soon after, he was attacked. Despite providing the police with video evidence, photographs, and vehicle numbers, he claims that no decisive action has been taken.

The protest saw participation from several prominent journalists including Sheharyar Khan, Rajendra Mishra, Rajendra Prasad, senior photojournalist Titu Sharma, Mohammad Zahid Akhtar, Neeraj Upadhyay, and many others.

The journalists reiterated their demand for a fair, transparent investigation and strict action against the real perpetrators.
