ISRO to Launch 101st Satellite on May 18: Played a Key Role in Operation Sindoor

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to achieve another milestone with the scheduled launch of its 101st satellite on May 18, 2025. The launch will take place from Sriharikota using the PSLV-C61 launch vehicle and will carry RISAT-18, an advanced Earth Observation satellite aimed at enhancing India’s surveillance and disaster management capabilities.

ISRO’s Strategic Role in Operation Sindoor

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian Armed Forces as a decisive counterstrike. Unseen but crucial in this mission was ISRO’s real-time space intelligence support. According to defence sources, ten of ISRO’s satellites were instrumental in providing:

  • Real-time surveillance

  • Secure communication channels

  • Accurate navigation support

These satellites served as the “space eyes and ears” for India’s air and ground forces, helping carry out precise strikes without crossing international borders. Their data was vital in ensuring the success and accuracy of the operation, marking ISRO’s growing role in national security.

ISRO Chairman: “Our Space Programs Are Strategically Planned for National Security”

ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan confirmed that the upcoming launch is part of India’s expanding space-based security infrastructure. “In January, we successfully launched our 100th rocket from Sriharikota. Now, RISAT-18 will be launched aboard PSLV-C61 on May 18,” he stated.

Dr. Narayanan stressed that ISRO’s space initiatives are not about global competition but are strategically aligned with India’s national interests. “Our programs are meant to safeguard the nation. Ten satellites are currently providing 24/7 monitoring to ensure the safety and security of Indian citizens,” he added.

About RISAT-18 and PSLV-C61

The RISAT-18 satellite will enhance India’s ability to monitor terrain, track hostile movements, and aid in disaster response. As part of the Radar Imaging Satellite series, RISAT-18 will provide high-resolution imagery regardless of weather or time, making it vital for military reconnaissance, agricultural planning, and natural disaster monitoring.

The launch will be carried out using PSLV-C61, India’s trusted and cost-effective Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle known for its precision and reliability.

India’s Space Edge in Modern Warfare

The integration of space-based assets into India’s military strategy marks a new chapter in hybrid warfare capabilities. With ISRO’s increasing role in real-time battlefield intelligence and satellite-based operations, India is significantly enhancing its non-invasive strike capabilities—capable of neutralising threats without ground invasion.

As ISRO gears up for its 101st launch, it reinforces the idea that space is not just the final frontier, but the future of national defence and global leadership.
