ISA Lucknow Celebrates World Anaesthesia Day with Grand Ceremony

Lucknow | The Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) Lucknow City Branch celebrated World Anaesthesia Day with great enthusiasm at a hotel in Gomtinagar, highlighting the vital role of anaesthesiologists in modern healthcare.

World Anaesthesia Day is observed every year on October 16, commemorating the first successful demonstration of ether anaesthesia by W. T. G. Morton in 1846, which revolutionized surgical medicine. The theme for 2025“Anaesthesiologists in Healthcare Emergencies” — underscores the multifaceted and lifesaving role of anaesthesiologists in intensive care, trauma management, resuscitation, pandemics, and disaster response.

The event was coordinated by Dr. S. S. Nath (President), Dr. Prem Raj Singh (Secretary), and Dr. Manish Kumar Singh (Treasurer) of ISA Lucknow City Branch. More than 100 anaesthesiologists from various medical institutions across Lucknow attended the celebration.

The highlight of the evening was the Prof. Deepak Malviya Oration, delivered by Prof. Mukul Chandra Kapoor, Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesia, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Faridabad, on the topic “Evolution from Ether Bottle to Artificial Intelligence (AI).” In his inspiring talk, Prof. Kapoor traced the historical journey of anaesthesia and discussed the growing influence of AI in the field. He emphasized that AI technologies are enhancing patient safety, improving real-time monitoring, and assisting clinicians in making precise intraoperative decisions during complex surgeries.

Awards were presented to recognize excellence in research and clinical practice. The Golden Laryngoscope Award for the best postgraduate paper presentations went to Dr. Kaushal (KGMU), Dr. Bikash Kumar Noel (Era Medical College), and Dr. Twarita Singh (SGPGIMS). The Col. R. K. Tripathi Young Achiever Award was conferred upon Dr. Shefali Gautam (KGMU), while the Lifetime Achievement Award was jointly presented to Dr. Dinesh Singh (Former Professor, KGMU) and Dr. Sanjay Kumar Dohre (Senior Consultant, Virangana Avantibai Mahila Hospital, Lucknow) for their outstanding contributions to the field of anaesthesiology.

A drawing competition added a creative touch to the event, showcasing the artistic talents of participating anaesthesiologists. The annual ISA Lucknow City Newsletter, edited by Dr. Indubala Maurya, was also released, featuring highlights of the branch’s academic and social initiatives throughout the year. Newly elected office-bearers formally assumed their responsibilities during the occasion.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Prem Raj Singh, who expressed gratitude to all guests and participants. He remarked, “Anaesthesiologists are not confined to operation theatres — they are silent lifesavers in every medical emergency. With the integration of AI and modern technology, their service is becoming even more efficient and safer.”

The celebration ended on a cordial note with a fellowship dinner, marking another successful year for ISA Lucknow in advancing medical education, awareness, and professional excellence.
