IPL Begins with a Bang

Lucknow: The much-awaited IPL, following the World Cup victory, got underway in spectacular fashion on Saturday at a packed M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This marked the first major match at the venue since the unfortunate stampede incident last season during the celebration of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s title win.

RCB, the defending champions, began their campaign on a winning note with a comfortable victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad. The pitch, however, appeared heavily tilted in favor of the batsmen, offering little assistance to the bowlers, who endured a tough outing throughout the match. Such tailor-made batting tracks raise concerns, as the game ideally demands a fair balance between bat and ball. Nevertheless, spectators and organizers seem increasingly inclined towards high-scoring encounters.

Over the years, the definition of a competitive total has undergone a dramatic shift. Not long ago, scores of around 160 were considered match-winning. Within a few seasons, that benchmark rose to 180, then 200, and now even targets exceeding 225 are proving insufficient. Both RCB and Mumbai Indians have already chased down 200-plus totals with relative ease this season. The game has seen a surge in six-hitting, often outnumbering boundaries, reflecting evolving playing styles and equipment advancements.

For seasoned observers, this transformation is remarkable. There was a time when clearing the pavilion was a rare feat, even for experienced cricketers. Today, such power-hitting has become almost routine.

Amid this run-fest, it was encouraging to see Virat Kohli and KL Rahul among the runs. Kohli once again demonstrated his mastery in chasing targets, while Rahul showcased equally impressive form. Fans now eagerly await MS Dhoni to deliver a similar impact, especially if he gets the opportunity to bat higher up the order.
