New Delhi: India’s in-form middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who emerged as the team’s biggest crisis-solver during the Champions Trophy 2025, has said that his role was to build on the strong platform provided by the top order and take the innings forward. Iyer, who ended as India’s highest run-scorer in the tournament, admitted that batting in the final was far from easy, especially against a quality spin attack.
“Needed to Maintain Momentum and Build Partnerships”
In an interview with CricIt, Iyer reflected on his performance at the crucial No. 4 position throughout the Champions Trophy. “As a No. 4 batter, it was important for me to maintain the momentum and convert the good start into something substantial. I understood that my role was to build partnerships and set the platform for the team,” Iyer said.
Mastering Spin in Dubai Conditions
Commenting on his success against spin-friendly conditions in Dubai, Iyer credited his upbringing on challenging pitches in Mumbai, where spin dominates. “It’s similar to playing on spinning tracks we grew up with in Mumbai, where you rarely see grass on the wicket. I learned early in my career that using your feet and having strong footwork is essential,” he explained.
Resilience in the Final Against New Zealand
In the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, Iyer once again delivered a crucial knock. “Taking singles was tough because they bowled to a plan and knew exactly how to operate on that pitch. Both Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner were bowling really well,” he noted, highlighting the challenge posed by New Zealand’s spin duo.
From World Cup 2023 to Champions Trophy 2025: A Consistent Performer
Iyer’s consistency is nothing new; he had a similar run of form during the 2023 World Cup, where he played several match-winning knocks for India. His ability to anchor the innings and handle pressure situations has earned him praise from across the cricketing fraternity.
A Dream Realized: “White Jacket Moment”
Reflecting on the joy of winning major titles in a short span, Iyer said, “It’s an achievement for me. The feeling was surreal. Wearing the white jacket was a profound moment—that’s what we dream about.”
