Indian Navy to Commission Latest Stealth Frigate ‘Taragiri’

Visakhapatnam: The Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth frigate, Taragiri (F41), on April 3, 2026, in a ceremony at Visakhapatnam presided over by Raksha Mantri  Rajnath Singh. The event marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward a fully self-reliant naval force.

The fourth platform of the Project 17A class, Taragiri displaces 6,670 tonnes and showcases cutting-edge stealth technology, featuring a reduced Radar Cross-Section and a sleek design. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, the ship incorporates over 75% indigenous content, highlighting India’s growing industrial and defence manufacturing ecosystem, including contributions from more than 200 MSMEs.

Equipped with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, Taragiri offers high-speed, long-endurance operations. Its advanced weapons suite includes supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, and a specialised Anti-Submarine Warfare suite, all integrated through a state-of-the-art Combat Management System for rapid threat response.

Beyond combat capabilities, Taragiri is designed for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions, diplomatic deployments, and multi-dimensional maritime operations. The frigate embodies India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, being designed, built, and operated entirely by Indians, reinforcing the Navy’s status as a combat-ready, credible, and cohesive force safeguarding the nation’s maritime frontiers.
