Lucknow – The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Sub-Regional Office, Lucknow, in collaboration with Bhatkhande Sanskriti University, organised a Lok Sangeet (folk music) programme under its monthly “Kshitij” series at Rai Umanath Bali Auditorium, Kaiserbagh. The event featured acclaimed folk singer Saroj Verma from Varanasi, accompanied by her ensemble.
Born in Varanasi, Saroj Verma received formal training from Banaras Hindu University and Prayag Sangeet Samiti, later honing her craft under the guidance of the late Bageshwari Devi and Padma Vibhushan Pt. Chhannulal Mishra. An “A” grade artiste of All India Radio Varanasi in the folk genre, she has performed across prestigious stages nationwide. She authored “Dharohar – Lok Mangal Geet”, a book documenting the legacy of folk music, and has served as a judge for various competitions. Dedicated to passing the tradition to future generations, she has also conducted numerous workshops. Her contribution to folk music has been recognised with multiple awards and honours.
