Ahmedabad: The grand finale of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 was played between the India national cricket team and the New Zealand national cricket team at the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, in front of a packed crowd. Thousands of fans gathered to witness the high-stakes clash, hoping to see India lift the prestigious trophy once again.

The final had been expected to be a closely contested encounter as both teams had reached the summit clash after impressive victories in their semi-final matches. New Zealand had comfortably defeated the South Africa national cricket team, while India secured a hard-fought win against the England national cricket team to book their place in the final.

Both sides entered the match with strong batting line-ups capable of dominating the opposition. However, there had been concerns over India’s bowling unit despite posting a huge total in the semi-final. Apart from the consistent performance of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, the rest of the bowling attack had faced criticism for conceding runs.

New Zealand, on the other hand, had displayed a balanced performance in their semi-final, registering a convincing win over South Africa. Earlier in the tournament, India had also suffered a defeat against the same opposition during the league stage. However, India held a slight psychological advantage, having defeated New Zealand 2–1 in a warm-up series before the tournament began.

India possessed a powerful batting order, although the form of young opener Abhishek Sharma had been a matter of concern after a string of low scores. There had been discussions about possible changes in the batting order, with players like Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan being considered as alternatives alongside Sanju Samson. However, the team management had largely preferred to retain the winning combination.

Questions had also been raised about the bowling combination, particularly regarding the form of spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Some experts believed that experienced wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav could have been a better option. Similarly, there had been discussions about including fast bowler Mohammed Siraj in place of Arshdeep Singh, or strengthening the side with three spinners depending on pitch conditions.

Unlike the high-scoring match earlier played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium was expected to behave differently. The Wankhede surface had heavily favoured batsmen, but the Ahmedabad wicket was considered more balanced, potentially offering assistance to bowlers as well. Experts believed that a total of around 200 runs could have been a competitive score in the final.

Cricket fans across the country followed the much-anticipated clash closely, hoping to see India deliver another memorable performance and bring home the World Cup trophy once again. Meanwhile, success in other sporting events, such as badminton star Lakshya Sen performing strongly at the All England Open Badminton Championships, added to the excitement for Indian sports fans.
