India Signs ₹858 Crore Defence Deals to Boost Air Defence and Naval Readiness

New Delhi: India has strengthened its military capabilities with the signing of two key defence agreements worth a combined ₹858 crore, aimed at enhancing air defence systems and maintaining critical naval assets.

The Ministry of Defence formalised a ₹445 crore contract with Rosoboronexport for the procurement of Tunguska air defence missile systems for the Indian Army. These advanced systems are designed to counter a range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles, thereby reinforcing India’s multi-layered air defence shield.

Officials noted that the agreement also underscores the continuing strategic defence partnership between India and Russia.

In a separate move, a ₹413 crore contract was signed with Boeing India Defence Private Limited for the maintenance of the Indian Navy’s P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft fleet. The deal focuses on depot-level servicing through a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility under the “Buy Indian” category, ensuring 100 percent indigenous content in the process.

The Indian Navy currently operates 12 P-8I aircraft, which play a crucial role in maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and safeguarding India’s interests in the Indian Ocean region.

Defence officials highlighted that these agreements reflect India’s continued push toward self-reliance in defence production while maintaining strong international partnerships to meet evolving security challenges.
