New Delhi/ Moscow: In a recent diplomatic meeting, India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, held discussions with Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister, Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin, to reinforce the strong defense ties between the two nations. The talks, described as taking place in a “warm and friendly atmosphere,” highlighted the long-standing and evolving nature of the strategic partnership.
The dialogue focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in the defense sector, affirming a shared goal to further strengthen their “Special Privileged Strategic Partnership.” The relationship has progressed over time from a traditional buyer-seller model to a more integrated framework of joint research, co-development, and shared production of advanced defense technologies.
The foundation of this cooperation is overseen by the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MMTC), a body led by the defense ministers of both countries. This commission guides numerous joint projects, which include the licensed production of T-90 tanks and Su-30 MKI fighter jets, the co-development of the BrahMos cruise missile, and the manufacturing of AK-203 assault rifles within India. Key naval and air assets, such as the INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier and Kamov helicopters, also underscore the depth of this partnership.

A significant point of discussion during the meeting was India’s plan to acquire more S-400 air defense systems. The performance of the existing S-400 system was particularly noted for its role in Operation Sindoor in May of this year, where it was credited with effectively intercepting multiple missiles from across the border, inflicting considerable damage on opposing forces. This successful operational use has underscored the strategic value of the system, driving the decision to expand India’s arsenal.
The ongoing high-level engagement between the two countries is further emphasized by the presence of India’s National Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval, in Moscow. Doval is holding meetings with senior Russian officials to discuss broader defense and security issues, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to strengthening the bilateral relationship at a critical time in international relations.
