Mumbai: India and France have agreed to broaden their long-standing bilateral relationship, elevating it to a “Special Global Strategic Partnership” following high-level talks between Narendra Modi and Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai.
The announcement came at the conclusion of Macron’s three-day visit to India, during which both leaders held extensive discussions covering defence, technology, clean energy and global security. Addressing the media after their meeting, Prime Minister Modi described the upgraded partnership as a reflection of deep mutual trust and a shared commitment to global stability amid rising geopolitical uncertainties.
Strategic Upgrade Amid Global Uncertainty
Modi emphasized that in a world marked by shifting geopolitical alignments and growing tensions, cooperation between New Delhi and Paris serves as a stabilizing force. He noted that both nations, rooted in democratic principles, have consistently expanded collaboration across multiple sectors.
President Macron called India one of France’s most dependable partners and highlighted the steady progress in defence and technological cooperation. He said the decision to elevate ties underscores a broader ambition to work closely on regional and global challenges.
21 Agreements Signed Across Key Sectors
Officials confirmed that 21 agreements and joint outcomes were finalized during the visit. These span defence cooperation, critical minerals, renewable energy, advanced materials, high technology, healthcare, startup ecosystems and skill development initiatives.
The defence partnership remains a cornerstone of bilateral ties. Ongoing cooperation involving Rafale fighter aircraft and submarine projects was cited as evidence of the growing strategic alignment between the two countries.
Both sides also pledged to deepen collaboration in clean energy and sustainability, recognizing climate change and energy security as shared priorities.
Boost to Aerospace Manufacturing
A major highlight of the visit was the virtual inauguration of an Airbus H125 helicopter final assembly line at Vemagal, Karnataka. The facility, set up by Airbus in partnership with Indian stakeholders, marks a significant step in strengthening India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
The plant is expected to generate employment, enhance skill development and position India as a hub for advanced aeronautics production. Officials stated that helicopters assembled at the facility will cater to both domestic and international markets.
Focus on Innovation and Global Issues
The leaders also launched the India-France Year of Innovation initiative to promote collaboration among startups, researchers and entrepreneurs. Discussions extended to global issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia and developments in the Indo-Pacific region.
Reaffirming their shared opposition to terrorism and support for a multipolar global order, Modi and Macron signaled their intent to coordinate more closely on global platforms, marking a new chapter in India-France relations.
