Impersonating DM office official Cyber Fraudster Dupes Youth of ₹1 Lakh

Lucknow – Cybercrime continues to rise in Uttar Pradesh’s capital, with the latest case emerging from the Sarojininagar police station area. A young man from Manasrover Extension, Kanpur Road, was duped of nearly ₹1 lakh by a cyber fraudster who impersonated an official from the District Magistrate’s Office.

Victim Intimidated with False Land Grab Accusation

The victim, identified as Jaihind, filed a written complaint stating that on May 14, he received a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as an officer from the Lucknow DM Office and falsely accused Jaihind of illegally encroaching on government land. The caller used a threatening tone and warned of serious legal consequences if immediate action wasn’t taken.

Sensitive Information Extracted Through Fear

Frightened by the mention of the DM’s office, Jaihind initially denied any wrongdoing. However, the fraudster intensified the threats and gradually coerced the victim into sharing sensitive personal information, including his Aadhaar number, driving license details, and bank name and branch.

₹99,998 Withdrawn Within Minutes

The call was suddenly disconnected after a few minutes. Moments later, Jaihind received a notification on his phone indicating a withdrawal of ₹99,998 from his bank account. Realizing he had been scammed, he rushed to the Sarojininagar Police Station and filed a formal complaint.

Police Register Case Under Cybercrime Act

The case has been registered under Section 66D of the IT Act, which deals with cheating by personation using communication devices. In his complaint, Jaihind pleaded, “I am a poor man, please help me recover the money that was stolen from my account.”

Police Assure Thorough Investigation

Police officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway and that efforts are being made to trace the fraudster through digital footprints and call records. “The matter is being taken seriously and cyber teams are actively working on the case,” an officer said.

This incident adds to the growing list of cyber frauds in Lucknow, highlighting the need for increased public awareness and stronger digital safeguards to prevent such crimes.
