Iceland Cricket Trolls Gautam Gambhir Over India’s Poor Test Run: “We Won’t Consider Him as Coach!”

New Delhi— Iceland Cricket, famous for its humorous and often razor-sharp social media posts, has once again grabbed global attention — this time by taking a cheeky dig at India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir. With India struggling in Test cricket in recent months, the Iceland Cricket Board used the moment to poke fun at Gambhir’s leadership.

From its official X handle, Iceland Cricket posted:
“For all our fans asking — no, we will not be considering Gautam Gambhir for the role of national team coach. The position is already filled, and we have won 75% of our matches in 2025.”

The sarcastic post quickly went viral, sparking conversations about India’s downward spiral in the Test format under Gambhir’s tenure. Once considered invincible at home, India have endured a string of unexpected defeats since Gambhir took charge.

India suffered a 3–0 whitewash against New Zealand at home, marking their first home series defeat in 12 years. This was followed by a 1–3 loss in Australia, a tour during which senior spinner R. Ashwin announced his retirement from Test cricket. In a major shock, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also retired from Tests midway through the tour.

Shubman Gill took over as the new Test captain, and India managed to draw the England series 2–2, offering some respite. But the overall home record under Gambhir remains alarming — six home Tests, four losses, and another defeat looming in the ongoing Guwahati Test against South Africa.

India’s only Test series wins in Gambhir’s tenure have come against relatively weaker sides — Bangladesh (2–0) and West Indies (2–0). Against stronger opponents at home, India have failed not just to win but even to secure a draw.

With Iceland Cricket’s trolling adding fuel to the debate, questions are now being raised sharply about India’s form, Gambhir’s methods, and the future of the Test side.
