Historic First Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery Successfully Performed at King George’s Medical University

Lucknow: In a significant milestone for neurological care in Uttar Pradesh, King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, successfully performed its *first Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery* on a 50-year-old female patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease for the past 25 years.

The patient had been experiencing severe motor complications despite prolonged medical treatment. DBS surgery was undertaken as an advanced therapeutic intervention to improve her quality of life. The procedure was completed successfully on *27th March 2026*, marking a major advancement in functional neurosurgery services at KGMU.

This complex surgery was performed through a collaborative effort between the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, with expert guidance from Dr. Dwarkanath Srinivas, Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, NIMHANS, Dr. Vikram Holla, Additional Professor, Department of Neurology, NIMHANS
The KGMU team involved in this landmark procedure included:
Dr. B.K. Ojha, Dr. Rajesh Verma, Dr. Hardeep Singh Malhotra, Dr. Anil Chandra, Dr. Somil Jaiswal, Dr. Shweta Pandey, Dr. Neeraj Kumar, Dr. Saurabh Kumar, Dr. Manish Jaiswal, Dr. Ankur Bajaj, Dr. Awdhesh Yadav, and Dr. Hanuman Prajapati.

Vice chancellor professor Sonia Nityanand congratulated the whole team and said that this achievement highlights the growing capabilities of KGMU in providing *state-of-the-art treatment for movement disorders* and opens new avenues for patients suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease in the region.
